The service and support capacity of Mexicali is growing but still limited. Most maquilas have brought with them or established their own suppliers. The Mexicali maquilas also rely upon El Centro - based businesses, where many Southern California companies have established distributorships to service the maquilas. Two tool and die shops are present; metal stamping can be obtained from existing machine shops, and electrical components can be obtained through air freight or trucking and warehousing. A lack of plastic injection molding and printed circuit board manufacturers would inhibit electronic operations. A review of Tijuana's network would be required for new start-ups in the Mexicali area.
